The fifth largest island in the Mediterranean and the largest in Greece is famous, not unjustly, for the beautiful coasts surrendered to blue-green water embraces. Beaches that awe-inspiring for their natural beauty.
The sandy beach of Rethymno is located just 500m east of the city centre, next to the Venetian Port with the picturesque lighthouse. It is a beautiful beach with fine golden sand and shallow waters, very well organized and next to all the comforts of a big city. It is essentially the western end of the great Gulf of Rethymnon, which extends 13 km east to Skaleta.
The famous Lagoon of Balos is located 56km Northwest of Chania and 17km Northwest of Kissamos. It is formed between the Cape Gramvousa and the small Cape Tigani. Is famous for its turquoise waters, the wild natural beauty and the beautiful exotic scenery. The lagoon of Balos has white sand and exotic white, vivid blue and turquoise waters. The sea is very shallow and warm, ideal for young children.
The Elafonissi Beach is located 76Km southwest of Chania. Is part of Natura 2000 protected area Natura, is full of sand dunes with sea daffodils and jupiners. The endangered loggerhead sea turtle and several more rare animals and plants find shelter on the island; it is strictly forbidden to remove any plants animals, shells, and sand from the area. Exotic beaches with white sand and turquoise water, reminding of the Caribbean, are formed on either side of the peninsula.
Preveli Beach is located 35km south of Rethymno and 10km east of Plakias beach. Preveli Beach also known as Lake Preveli or Phoenixis located at the exit of Grand River who flows through the imposing Kourtaliotis Gorge and Fratiano’s Gorge. It is certainly the most famous beach in south Crete, accepting thousands of visitors every summer. During the ’60s and ’70s, it was a favorite destination for the hippies.
On the banks of the Grand River there is a large colony of Theophrastus palm trees, which give the region a sense of a tropical landscape. The river, forming a small lake, 500m long, before emptying into the sea, has water all year round. You can walk along the river, under the shade of palm trees and other trees, and start ascending in the beautiful canyon. You can swim in the cold ponds formed in the gorge.
Triopetra is located about 52km south of Rethymno and 13km southeast of the village Akoumia, at the foot of the mountain Siderotas. It can be accessed by car, through paved roads that start either from Akoumia or Sachtouria. Triopetra lies in the central part of a long beachfront, called Akoumiani Gialia, (i.e. Akoumia Beach). This is named like this because the wider area of Triopetra was once the winter sheter of Akoumia village residents, who had built small cottages to spend the night near their olive groves.
Triopetra consists of two beaches, which are separated by a small peninsula. At the edge of the peninsula, in the sea, three majestic rocks rise. Triopetra is named after these rocks, since it means “Three Rocks”. The first beach, known as Small Triopetra (or Koumado), is located in a closed sandy and rocky bay, south of the three rocks. In its southern end flows the river Akoumianos. This river separates Triopetra area from the magical beach of Agios Pavlos Sandhills at Cape Melissa.
The exotic beach of Falasarna is located 59km west of Chania and 17Km west of Kissamos, on the west side of Peninsula Gramvousa. At the northern end of the beach there are the ruins of the ancient Grecoroman city of Phalassarna. Falassarna bay hosts some of the most famous beaches in Greece, which has been awarded as the best beach of Crete and voted as one of the 10 best beaches in Europe several times in the past. Falasarna spans a large area and consists actually of five consecutive beaches, with the two most central being the most favorite. The sand in Falassarna is whitish, making the water color tropical.
Beach of Kitrenosis, known as Spilies Beach or Maliou Stream is located 15km east of Rethymno, in the quet area of Latzimas, few Kilometers east of Skaleta and just before Geropotamos. It is quite unknown to most visitors, though it is very close to the highway that connects Heraklion and Rethymno. It is formed in a small rocky bay with a pebbly beach and crystal clear deep waters, protected by vertical cliffs.
Beach of Episkopi is located 45km east of Chania and 14km west of Rethymno, in a fertile plain with extensive olive groves. It takes its name from the main village of Episkopi located 2km to the south. Almost no-one Greek knows this place, but everybody knows the family Vardinoyannis, originating from here; this is one of the richest business families in Greece. Is part of the big Georgioupolis Beach bounded on the west by the river Mouselas in the place of Ancient Hydramiaand on the east by the river that runs in the Gorge of Petres and the Beaches of Petres.
